Happy New Year!

The Dillon Empire hereby wishes you a very Happy New Year, and hopes you have a splendid 2025. Tradition dictates that l set out my main writing plans for the year ahead, so here’s what I hope to achieve.

Since August, I’ve been researching, outlining, and creating character profiles for my next novel. It’s the first in a series of dark mystery thrillers with a supernatural edge featuring a private detective and her assistant investigating a particularly baffling murder. Each of these novels will be a standalone mystery, but a bigger mystery will start to reveal itself in the background as the novels progress. As you can see, this is a hugely ambitious project as I’ve not consciously undertaken the writing of a series before (The George Hughes Trilogy was an accident in that respect, so doesn’t really count). At any rate, I am about to start writing the first draft of the first novel, so I’ll keep you updated on progress.

Also, this year, I might release another of my novels: horror-thriller mystery The Hobbford Giant. I’m still shipping that one around agents and publishers, but if I draw a blank, I may self-publish it. Alternatively, I might self-publish another volume of short stories (probably some of my fantasy tales, a few of which have previously appeared on Medium and Substack, and some of which have never been published before). I can’t say for sure which way I’ll leap, but one or the other of those will hopefully be available by the end of the year.

On top of this, I aim to write a clutch of new short stories, as well as pen another significant segment of my epic sequel to an as-yet unpublished children’s fantasy novel I wrote ten years ago, tentatively entitled The Faerie Gate (though that title will change). I had hoped to make progress on that novel last year, but that didn’t happen for various reasons; mainly, I’d bitten off more than I could chew, and something had to give. However, this year, I hope I’ll have the window to get another chunk finished. The novel is about half finished at present, and if I can get to two-thirds finished by the end of the year, that would be splendid. It’s turned into a bit of a monster in terms of length, so this novel could wind up being divided into separate volumes akin to The Lord of the Rings. But we’ll see. At present, I still think of it as one novel.

Beyond all that, I plan to revise and polish the mystery novel I wrote last year. I call it False Witness at present, even though that isn’t the real title (I’m keeping it a secret, for now). In addition, if The Hobbford Giant fails to get snapped up by agents and publishers, I’m going to send out A Thorn in Winter; another mystery novel which I originally wrote in 2022. As you can see, I’m not giving up on that front. Who knows? Perhaps this will be the year I find a mainstream publisher (I’ve had novels traditionally published in small indie presses before, but not by any of the big guns).

It will be interesting to see where I get to with all the above by the end of the year. I’m sure I’ll be immensely busy. In the meantime, thank you for supporting my writing. Again, I wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Happy New Year!

A very Happy New Year from the Dillon Empire. I hope you are enjoying your holiday. As per New Year’s Day tradition, it’s time to reveal some of my writing plans for 2024.

My top priority is writing my next novel. I spent the second half of 2023 researching, creating character profiles, and outlining my next mystery thriller, tentatively titled False Witness, though I promise that title will change. The plot remains a closely guarded secret at present, but I will say it concerns a female protagonist with a terrible secret in her past. Yes, I know lots of my horror-thriller novels feature imperilled heroines with dark secrets, but this one is darker than I’ve gone before, and involves a particularly intriguing premise, though I say so myself. I’m very excited about writing it and will keep you updated on progress.

I may also release another anthology of short stories this year, though please don’t hold me to it. If I do, it is likely to be a collection of dark fairy tales and fantasy stories, some of which you may already have seen on Medium, Substack, or elsewhere, and some of which I have yet to write. I may include my short story Papercut, which you can download free here, if you’re interested in a sample. I intend to write more short stories this year too, not necessarily just those that will appear in a hypothetical anthology.

Beyond this, I hope to finish another significant chunk of my epic sequel to an as-yet unpublished children’s fantasy novel I wrote ten years ago, tentatively entitled The Faerie Gate (though that title will almost certainly change). This sequel has proved something of a monster to write, proving a hugely ambitious work that I’ve undertaken on and off over the past three years. I’m currently about halfway through, and my modest goal for this year is to get two-thirds of the way through. This story may wind up being split into three separate volumes akin to The Lord of the Rings, but I’m not certain yet. At any rate, given that the first book remains unreleased, this is likely to be a long-term project.

On top of this, I plan to revise and polish A Thorn in Winter, the mystery thriller novel I wrote last year. At the same time, I will keep showcasing The Hobbford Giant to agents and publishers, in the hope of finally cracking that mainstream publication deal. I am not giving up on that front and will keep you informed of all developments.

Perhaps, at the end of 2024, I’ll have achieved all the above. Perhaps not. Either way, as always, watch this space. Thank you so much for your ongoing support of my writing endeavours, and again, I wish you all a Happy New Year.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from the Dillon Empire. I hope you’re enjoying your holiday. Time to reveal some of what I have planned for 2023, writing-wise.

Firstly, I’m penning another gothic mystery novel. This one involves a young woman caught in a web of blackmail, but that noir-ish opening gradually gives way to potentially supernatural horror elements that creep into the narrative. I don’t want to say too much more at this stage, but I’ve already written chapter one, and I hope to have a first draft within the next three months. The finished novel should sit nicely alongside my previous gothic horror-thrillers, including Spectre of Springwell Forest, The Irresistible Summons, and Phantom Audition.

Secondly, I plan to make good on one of my unrealised goals of 2022 and publish an overdue second volume of short stories. This one will probably stay away from horror, but it will contain romance, science fiction, fantasy, dark comedy, and various other genres. Most of the stories have been previously published on Medium and one or two other places, but at least two stories will be exclusive to this volume.

Thirdly, I plan to revise and polish The Hobbford Giant, so it is ready to show to agents and publishers, should the need arise. I wrote this novel last year, so I’m ready to take another look at it, having given a decent interval of time for the dust to settle on my objectivity. I have a good feeling about this one, so watch this space.

Fourthly, I shall continue pushing my gothic mystery The White Nest (real title still redacted for now) with literary agents, in the hope of securing mainstream publication. I’ve had some encouraging noises on that front, but nothing certain yet. It would be great to get to the end of 2023 with something concrete.

On top of this, I plan to continue writing on Medium and Patreon, and I have one or two other platform launches I’m planning for 2023, which I’ll keep quiet about for now. As ever, watch this space. Thank you for all your support of my writing endeavours, and once again, Happy New Year.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! With the year of change that was 2021 in the rear-view mirror, I’m hoping this year will see many exciting developments with my writing. I shall of course keep you fully appraised on this blog, so here are a few of my plans for 2022.

First and foremost, I am writing a new novel. It’s another gothic mystery, currently untitled, which I hope will sit nicely alongside previous titles such as The Birds Began to Sing and Phantom Audition. I won’t mention anything about the plot at this point, other than to say it is set in a fictional south-west England town and features a young journalist who gets drawn into a local mystery with links to her past. That’s deliberately vague, as I am protecting what I believe to be a pretty rock-solid story with a cracking finale.

Secondly, I will continue to contribute articles to Medium, though I might slow down a little in that regard whilst getting the first draft of the aforementioned novel on paper. Film reviews will continue to be available both on this blog and on Medium, but other articles on literature, film, music, television, and the odd rant, will be exclusive to Medium.

Thirdly, I aim to resurrect The Tangent Tree film podcast this year, with my co-host Samantha Stephen. Yes, I know I said I’d do that last year, but life threw a few spanners in the works. This year however, I hope to deliver on that promise.

Fourthly, I hope to publish at least one further anthology of short stories. This time they won’t be horror stories, but some of my more romantic pieces, and perhaps some fantasy, satire, and a couple of exclusives, akin to what I did with Infestation: A Horror Anthology last year.

Finally, I am taking another crack at the mainstream publication route with my fantasy novel Ravenseed and am actively chasing agents and publishers to that end. I had planned to do this last year, but again, life threw a few gremlins into the mix. At any rate, Ravenseed is a gripping, grown-up tale of love, lust, betrayal, and vengeance, primarily set in the Dark Ages, with a parallel story in the present (or rather, in 2019, to avoid pandemic references). I’m rather pleased with this novel, so I hope agents and publishers are similarly positive. Here’s hoping, and as always, I will keep you updated.

Happy New Year 2019!

Happy New Year!

2019

Last year was a hugely significant year for my writing, not least because my first novel to be published by a traditional publisher, Spectre of Springwell Forest, has now been released. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, what are you waiting for? Click here (for the UK) and here (for the US) and dive into a nail-biting ghostly mystery that will brighten up your January with page-turning suspense.

So what are my writing plans for 2019?

For a start, I have submitted a short story entitled Paper Cut for inclusion in the upcoming Dragon Soul Press romantic fantasy anthology First Love. More to be announced on that front in due course.

Aside from that, I have started writing my first novel for 2019 – an as yet untitled ghostly tale which is lighter on the terror than Spectre of Springwell Forest and The Thistlewood Curse, yet still falls neatly within the psychological/supernatural thriller/horror spectrum in which I greatly enjoy writing. I will keep my lips sealed on details so far… suffice to say it involves a famous dead actor, his rather less famous actress widow, a large sinister house, a medium, and a big mystery.

Also this year, I intend to finally stop procrastinating and write the science fiction novellas I have put off since mid-2017 (when I opted to write Echo and the White Howl instead). Those I really will say nothing about for now.

On top of that, I hope to have at least one other novel released this year, possibly horror mystery The Irresistible Summons which I wrote back in 2015, depending on what my publisher makes of it. Watch this space for more updates on that and other writing related matters throughout the year. Here’s hoping it’s a good one.
